How to Choose Home Interior Room Colours

Whether you have just recently moved into your home or are simply looking to update your home interior, it can be difficult to decide what room colours to choose.

The colour you paint your walls with will form one of, if not the main feature of your room, so it is imperative that you consider how the room is used before you begin coating your walls in fresh paint.

Considerations to Make

The Size of The Room

When choosing the room colours for your home, consider the size of the room. If your rooms are relatively small, darker colours can make the space feel even more cramped. On the contrary, if you have a large room that you want to make feel more intimate, you may wish to use warm or bold colours to draw the eye to these areas and not the vast open space between the walls. Wallpaper, accessories and eye catching patterns can also provide the feeling of intimacy to a space.

Lighting

It is not always the case that individuals consider the lighting of their space before they pick up a new pot of paint to coat their walls in.

If you’re currently in the process of testing several room colours, be sure to take note of the how the colour looks in the various types of light the room is bathed in throughout the day. Natural light will give you the truest representation of the colour, but not all rooms receive a lot of natural light, particularly during the winter months.

Incandescent light will bring out warm tones in a colour, whilst fluorescent lighting will look much cooler and cast a sharp blue tone.

Be sure to look at how the colours appear when you have the main light in the room switched on and off, as well as when any lamps are used.

The Finish

Matt and gloss paints vary in their finish, which can sometimes make the colour appear slightly differently. Consequently, it is important that if you begin with matt room colours that you continue using this type of finish across the rest of the walls.

In recent years, paint with light reflecting particles has been brought on to the market. The paint often dubbed “Light and Space” is said to create the appearance of a brighter and large space and can be found in most DIY stores.
